I have been watching nothing but the devastation that Hurricane Katrina has heaped on the gulf coast all morning long. I can hardly believe the wreckage that she has left behind. Not to mention the people who did not heed the mandatory evacuating who were unnecessarily killed. The counties should have instituted Marshall law and rounded everybody up and shipped them out.
Anyway, Mike and I were just talking last night about how moderate our area is. We don't really have to worry about hurricanes, no earthquakes, no real tornadoes to speak of, not a lot of snow. We really do live in a great part of the country. The mountains just a few hours a way, the beach just a few hours away. We couldn't ask to be in a better place.
I was in the mountains this past weekend with a friend from college and as we drove up the mountain it was amazing to me that only an hour and a half away from our home, we drove right into spectacular views of the blue ridge mountains, not to mention a relief from the heat. We went from 92 to 68 in a matter of and hour. It was really nice to get away and to catch up with an old friend.
As college gets farther and farther away, I am realizing how important it is for me to keep in touch with my girlfriends, my real girlfriends. Those that are just as interested in what's going on I'm my life as I am in theirs. I guess I have also come to see who my true friends are and who those are that don't have time to keep up or rather don't want to take the time. My response is that I don't have nor will I make time for those people. In any event, I am really glad I have kept up with those that I feel l closest too. These will be my lifelong friends no matter what happens, divorce, children, deaths.......These will be the people that are there for me, and I for them.
I guess Ihave finally come to the realization that you just have to let some friendships go, those where you feel you are the only one putting forth any effort, ever. I know that friendships are give and take, but I refuse to be in a friendship that is all take from me.
